Nominet UK, the .uk domain name registry has contracted with MaNAP, the Manchester based Internet exchange, to host a secondary .uk nameserver.
Manchester, UK (PRWEB) February 14, 2004--Nominet UK, the .uk domain name registry has contracted with MaNAP, the Manchester based Internet exchange, to host a secondary .uk nameserver.
The decision by Nominet forms part of a wider strategic review being implemented by IT Director, Jay Daley and confirms MaNAP’s status as an Internet exchange of strategic importance within Europe.
Nominet’s nameservers hold authoritative information that enables the internet community to use easy to remember domain names instead of the underlying IP addresses to which they relate. By locating a copy of this database at MaNAP, Nominet have increased the resilience and improved the reliability of their system for all users as there is now additional server capacity in the event of server overload or failure. In addition MaNAP members and their customers have the added benefit of faster response times
Marcus Hopwood, MaNAP’s CEO commented “We are very pleased to be working with Nominet on this important project. For a number of years MaNAP has been committed to increasing the resilience of the UK’s Internet infrastructure; the decision taken by Nominet to host a .uk nameserver with us represents a significant step towards alleviating the UK Internet’s dependence on London.â€
Jay Daley, Director of IT for Nominet said, “mitigating the risk to our primary nameservers is extremely important because of the huge volumes of traffic that we handle every day. By contracting with MaNAP, I feel confident that we have greatly increased the resilience of our systems and removed the problem of geographic concentration in one area.â€
